Emergent Bodywork with Kevin Troiano

"because your cells know what to do..."

What if the body was trying to fight low back pain in the same way that it fights the common cold? What if the body was actually trying not only to avoid pain and illness but to increase competence, restore length and balance to the tissues, resolve bony strain and increase flexibility and strength?

Far beyond the model of an isolated immune system "fighting the common cold", the entire body is actually focused on the possibility of profound, dynamic health and vivacity. The reason that this is not readily evident in our world is because most of us are disconnected from the mechanism that allows these more advanced processes to get under way.  We spend most of our time mired in pain and disorganization treating the tip of the iceberg with symptomatic solutions.

Because the "size" of our back pain is enormous when compared to the size of the common cold, we have trouble making the necessary adjustments in ourselves to resolve our larger problems. This doesn't mean that our cells aren't trying to fix the problem in the same way that they would with a cold.  They are, it's just that blood by itself can only do so much.  And yet within every cell there is a blueprint for health and higher functioning that can be followed in much the same way normal blueprints allow buildings and houses to be erected.

Since we have the blueprint, what we need is the ability to understand it and implement the forces that can bring its intentions to bear.  Our capacity to understand the blueprint is dependent on our ability to perceive the expression of our intracellular intelligence, the result of a specific form of meditation called Tidal Meditation.  The forces involved include movement of and contact with the self just as erecting a building involves working with raw materials and modifying them to meet the blueprint's specifications.

This is Emergent Bodywork:  work on the self that is rooted in our intracellular intelligence.  The result is that we are ultimately able to effectively resolve the strain patterns our lives create by responding to their unique characteristics.  Rather than a set of preconceived contacts, stretches or exercises, instead of offering various miracle tools, devices or supplements, what we tune into in sessions is the kinesthetic appetite of our cells and then satisfy that appetite by using deep tissue bodywork, massage techniques, osteopathic (bone and joint) contact, off body energy work and client participation (assisted and/or directed movement).
